Let’s review the New York Giants’ 23-19 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, unfortunately the final time the Giants will play until next season, in our traditional ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’ style.

Kudos to …
Sterling Shepard — The only Giant draft pick on the current roster who has played in a playoff game helped show the way on Sunday. Shepard ran for a 23-yard score on a reverse, caught a 10-yard touchdown pass and caught eight passes for a season-high 112 yards.

“Just make plays. It’s as simple as that,” is how Shepard described his mindset. “We’re a skill group that is out there to make big plays. That’s all I wanted to do. Whatever I could do to help the team.”

Leonard Williams — Williams picked a great time for the first three-sack game of his career. He also had 7 tackles, 3 for loss, 5 quarterback hits, a pass defensed and a pressure that led to Xavier McKinney’s interception on the final Dallas possession of the game.

Williams is going to get a massive payday this offseason. It better be from the Giants.

No anger mismanagement. No bipolar disorder. No domestic violence. No assaults. No DWI charges. No vandalism. No performance-enhancing drugs. No arrests.

No substance abuse.

Only substance.

Once upon a time – before his risk-taking, oil-wildcattin’ DNA-fueled gambles on “talented-but-troubled” D-linemen Charles Haley, Cheap Alonzo Spellman Jersey, Dimitrius Underwood, Josh Brent, Greg Hardy, Cheap David Irving Jersey, Cheap Randy Gregory Jersey, Cheap Robert Quinn Jersey and now Cheap Aldon Smith Jersey – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a 1988 draft flier on Cheap Chad Hennings Jersey.

He was guaranteed not to play a down in the NFL for at least four years.

He was committed first and foremost – body, mind, heart and soul – to the United States Air Force.

He routinely piloted dangerous missions into active battlefields.

But considering the Cowboys’ lousy lineage of bang-for-their-baggage defensive linemen, Hennings was a surprisingly safe bet.

“Going straight from the war to football was the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced,” Hennings told me recently. “There are obviously traits that carried over, but it was just a whole new world. Physically. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually. I went from taking out the enemy to learning how to be teammates with Cheap Charles Haley Jersey and Cheap Michael Irvin Jersey.”

Despite a litany of legal troubles that have kept him off an NFL field since 2015, Smith last week earned a contract from Jones. As CowboysSI.com broke it down, the one-year, incentive-laden deal severely mitigates the Cowboys’ investment, with only $95,000 of a possible $4 million guaranteed. Five years ago, Smith was a Pro Bowl player with 33.5 sacks his first 16 games.

Maybe things have turned around. Here we read about Smith being 287 pounds of muscle, of his good deeds with military vets, of his new-found sobriety.

But indisputably, Aldon Smith has a past. And also, a past.

Unlike other Jones character-be-damned gambles on defensive players Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and Rolando McClain, Hennings was all about the future. His only risk was the passage of time.

Xavier McKinney — The rookie safety made a huge play, picking off a desperation heave to the end zone by Cheap Andy Dalton Jersey that was headed for Cowboy tight end Cheap Dalton Schultz Jersey. McKinney had 8 tackles, one for loss, and a pass defensed.

Offensive line — The Giants’ offensive line gave Daniel Jones time all day. He was sacked once and hit six times. There were also some holes for Wayne Gallman and Cheap Alfred Morris Jersey, when the Giants remembered to use the run game.

Daniel Jones — The stats aren’t overwhelming — 17 of 25, 229 yards, 2 TDs, an interception, a fumble, 17 yards rushing. Jones, though, met the challenge of playing well in what was to this point the biggest game of his fledgling NFL career.

Dante Pettis — The San Francisco 49ers reject made two big plays for the Giants on Sunday. Pettis had a 33-yard touchdown grab and 10-yard catch that set up Graham Gano’s 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Julian Love — Aside from dropping what should have been an interception, Love played a solid game starting at outside cornerback in place of Isaac Yiadom. Love had 7 tackles and a pass breakup. His presence on the outside, along with Darnay Holmes’ return in the slot, allowed the Giants to play more man-to-man defense than they normally do.

Jabrill Peppers’ punt returning — Peppers had punt returns of 20 and 19 yards, the first time in a while he has really made plays for the Giants in the return game. Unfortunately, the Giants could not turn either of those solid returns into points.

Wet Willies to …
Evan Engram — Two more awful, inexcusable drops on well-thrown balls that should be easily catchable for an NFL tight end. Especially a Pro Bowl tight end. One of those drops, of course, turned into the sixth interception on a pass targeting Engram this season. The frustrating thing about Engram is that for every splash play he makes that helps the Giants, he makes at least as many that hurt them. He is the walking definition of a “Kwillie.”

Riley Dixon — I don’t know what is going on with Dixon, but he hasn’t been nearly as good the last few games as he was in 2019, or in the first half of this season. He didn’t come close on a pair of opportunities to pin Dallas deep on Sunday.

Dion Lewis — The veteran running back did not fumble this week while executing kickoff return duties, but he did not make any plays, either. It is brutally obvious that teams have been kicking off in such a manner as to force Lewis to return the ball. He averaged 21.0 yards on three returns Sunday. Lewis has had a couple of good returns this season, but he just doesn’t give the Giants much in that role.

Doug Pederson — Passing up a chip-shot game-tying field goal? Even worse, basically handing Washington the division by playing Nate Sudfeld at quarterback in the fourth quarter? To think, Giants fans actually gave up sleep in the hopes that the Philadelphia Eagles would defeat Washington on Sunday night.

Kwillie to …
Graham Gano — His 50-yard field goal late in Sunday’s game provided points the Giants desperately needed. Still, that first-quarter missed extra point might be the ugliest missed extra point I have ever seen from a kicker above the high school level. What the heck happened there?

The draft position has been set for this Dallas Cowboys mock draft…
After months of speculation, the Dallas Cowboys finally know their spot in the draft order: Pick 10. While not as high as many hoped, something can be said for the Dallas Cowboys resilience down the stretch and ability to win three of their final four games of the season.

Even with the surge, the Cowboys are still picking in the top-10 in the 2021 NFL Draft. With as many as four QBs going in the top-10, Dallas could still find a trade partner that wants to move up to snag the last remaining “franchise QB” in this draft (likely Trey Lance). If Dallas can seize that opportunity, they could find themselves in position to pick up an extra one or two picks in the top-100.

In this draft scenario the Dallas Cowboys trade with the Chicago Bears. Dallas moves back to Pick 20 and gains an extra 2021 second rounder and a 2022 third rounder.

When the Dallas Cowboys hired Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan last January, the thought was that his hybrid scheme with multiple three and four-man fronts would keep opposing offenses off-balance.

The defense as a whole struggled for most of the 2020 season. They finished 28th in points allowed, 31st against the run, and 23rd in overall defense. The best player on the Cowboys defensive unit, DeMarcus Lawrence Jersey, talked on Monday about how injuries and playing young players were a big part of the struggles on defense in Dallas.

“We went through some tough battles at the beginning of the season,” Lawrence said, via the team’s website. “Not me personally with Coach, but I’m just saying, in general, as a defense we went through tough battles. When you’re playing with young guys on defense you have to take into consideration that some things that are easy for me won’t be easy for the next person.”

The Cowboys ended the season on a high note going 3-1 over their last four games, mainly due to an improved defensive unit. They only allowed 20 points per game over that span which was almost 10 points lower than their average for the season (29.9). Also, they forced 12 turnovers, which was more than they had in the first 12 games (11).

Lawrence mentioned that Nolan made adjustments to his scheme to get better results on the field, which included more snaps for guys like Randy Gregory Jersey and second-year safety Donovan Wilson Jersey.

“I respect Mike as a man because he looked himself in the mirror and he changed some things to make us play faster and helped us play better,” Lawrence said. “I mean, it was later in the season, but we started to see improvements, and I think it really shined a light on the type of players we are.”

Despite playing on a defense that was one of the league’s worst from an overall standpoint, Lawrence was his usual dominant self. He finished third in run stops and forced fumbles (4) for all edge rushers according to Pro Football Focus who also named him a second-team All-Pro for 2020.

The game of football is the ultimate team sport, though, and Lawrence vows to have the Cowboys defense ready for next season.

“I’ll make sure we’re ready,” Lawrence said. “That’s all there is to it. You can expect us to give our all, make sure we come out there and dominate each and every play and make sure we show you the type of men we have in this locker room.”

The 2021 NFL Draft is a little under four months away. Possessing the 10th overall pick, if the Cowboys are smart, defense will be a huge priority.

Dallas Cowboys Pick 20
Jaycee Horn, CB

South Carolina

The Dallas Cowboys need to invest early in the cornerback position. They stand to lose starter Chidobe Awuzie Jersey and reserve Jourdan Lewis Jersey in free agency this winter and need a plug and play starter to replace them.

In this scenario, Caleb Farley was off the board at Pick 10 so rather than reach on Patrick Surtain, they traded back, snagging a couple extra picks and moving back to a spot where the value makes sense.

Jaycee Horn’s stock has been on the rise all season. The South Carolina cornerback has been one of the premier prospects in this draft class and could ultimately be the best in the class. Standing 6-foot-1 205lbs, Horn is the type of big-bodied, long corners the Dallas Cowboys covet on the boundary.

Horn thrives in man coverage and can physically match-up against just about anyone (including TEs). He’s smart and instinctual. Sticky in man coverage Horn has true No. 1 CB ability and would be one heck of a partner to Trevon Diggs Jersey on the opposite side. He’s rated as my No. 2 CB in the draft.
